SELF-GUIDED TOURS
"Visit Harpers Ferry - Bolivar" has several sections organized by themes providing many self-guided tours to heritage & cultural Points of Interests (POIs), as well as significant historical events in the two Towns and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Currently, there are about 300 historical & cultural sites and 50 historical events - with more being added regularly.
The descriptions of these sites & events are adapted from archival documents including Park publications, old newspapers, history books, War of the Rebellion Official Records, county property records, and National Register of Historic Places nominations for the Town of Harpers Ferry and the National Historic Park.
The "National Park Guide" tour is a handy electronic companion to the Park Visitor Guide Map distributed by the Park. This tour provides more details about each of the roughly 30 museums, exhibits, and POIs on the Park Map. In the Self-Guided Tours section, there are more topical tours including Maryland Heights, Loudoun Heights, Bolivar Heights, and Virginius Island.
The "Black Heritage Guide" tour is a comprehensive list of about 30 houses and buildings significant to the black heritage of the Town of Harpers Ferry. The establishment of schools for educating "Freedmen" after the Civil War created a great influx of people and construction boom of houses, schools, and churches.
There is a section with about 150 houses & buildings in Harpers Ferry, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as a tour of sites in Historic Bolivar. All of these sites are in the Towns, not the National Park, and are not provided in any park material.
The "1861 Actions" tour in the Civil War section is a comprehensive list of significant events in Harpers Ferry during 1861 when "Life in a War Zone" was at its worst. Many Civil War "Actions" during 1862-1865 are also provided.
The "Trails" tour is a handy electronic companion to the 7 Trail Maps distributed by the Park. In the Self-Guided Tours section, there is a tour for each trail with detailed descriptions for each site.
There are other sections containing many other historical & cultural sites in Harpers Ferry, Bolivar, and the National Historical Park - with more being added regularly.
